What a year 2020 has been: never could we have imagined it. This time last year, the idea of a global pandemic, which continues to rage on and on, seemed like the stuff of sci-fi fantasy. Yet here we are…

But how has this year affected SMTP2GO? Charles Abrahamson, our CEO, who’s based in New Zealand, answers this and other questions, as he looks back over the year that nobody is likely to forget.

Do you think we’ve navigated 2020 well? Is there anything we could have done better?

I think 2020 has personally been a very hard year for us all but at least, as a business, we’ve come through it in a stronger position than at the start. We have improved our growth rate and welcomed aboard a lot of new customers.

Next year we’ll experiment with more regular meetings amongst the development team. We’ll decide the most important things that need to be done, and will set deadlines to ensure the whole team is focused on pushing features over the finish line.

What have you learnt, if anything, from this unprecedented year?

Remote working is here to stay – and we were well prepared to handle the impact of having to stay at home. However, even with remote working, it is still important to meet up physically with the team as much as possible. This has been hard for those in our team in all countries except New Zealand (we’ve had it relatively easy here, with no restrictions after an initial lockdown). The team has had to miss out on the many conferences and networking events they regularly attend across the US and Europe.

In a pretty dark year, what have the highlights been?

A lot of great work has been done, but the much-requested Subaccounts feature has been released, and is already proving very popular. It enables customers to set up and manage separate accounts for each of their own customers, while handling the billing for them.

What do you think other people should know about our company?

We really care about our customers – every member of our support team takes pride in the level of service they give, and I’ve never come across a business that provides a level of service as high. We see this reflected in our reviews at Trustpilot, Capterra, G2 and other places.

What’s on the horizon for next year and beyond?

Next year we can look forward to email templating, the introduction of unsubscribe types to allow a recipient to unsubscribe from only certain types of emails, and email address validation.

Bye 2020! Happy New Year to one and all – and here’s hoping for a better, bug-free 2021 🤞
